A new bill would give the President emergency authority to halt web traffic and access private data. – Should President Obama have the power to shut down domestic Internet traffic during a state of emergency?

Senators John Rockefeller (D-W. Virginia) (202) 224-6472 – and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) (202) 224-5344 – think so. – On Wednesday they introduced a bill to establish the Office of the National Cybersecurity Advisor–an arm of the executive branch that would have vast power to monitor and control Internet traffic to protect against threats to critical cyber infrastructure. That broad power is rattling some civil libertarians.

Do people actually read these bills? I just did, quickly at least. There is no provision allowing the president to shut down internet traffic. I can find no provision at all that resembles “to access private data.”

Rather, the President would have have the authority to isolate federal systems from the internet if necessary: “[The President] may declare a cybersecurity emergency and order the limitation or shutdown of Internet traffic to and from any compromised Federal government or United States critical infrastructure information system or network.”

Hardly the same thing. Why do people have to hugely inflate that which they dislike or mistrust to drum up opposition to it?

    • Thank You for reading the bill. That’s all i want my people to do. Begin reading the bills. I know my subject line is a little mis-leading. But I found out that most people don’t read the bills that are passed each week.

@ nexmillen: Man, I hear ya. We have reached the sad point where people cling to entrenched beliefs, and blindly jump on anything that fires up the satisfaction receptors in their brains *lol*. The critical thinking step is skipped. I’m glad to know you are not among them. Be well!
