At this time, NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, launched August 12, 2005, is on a search for evidence that water existed on the surface of Mars for a long period of time. While other Mars missions have shown that water flowed across the surface in Mars’ history, it remains a mystery whether water was ever around long enough to provide a habitat for life.

The MRO’s latest mission happened on August 12, 2009, when the high-resolution camera on NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter returned a dramatic oblique view of the Martian crater that a rover explored for two years. http://hirise.lpl.arizona.edu/ESP_013954_1780

NASA also has an in-depth video about the MRO mission to Mars (Soaring Over Mars) with even more breathtaking pictures. Please take the time to check them out. – GCR
