The flapdoodle over the e-mail hacking incident commonly known as “climategate” has become the latest stage for politicizers to vent their spleen, and yet another example of how difficult it is to solve difficult problems when everybody and his brother has an opinion on it –and mostly, the opinions are agendized by their politics. It’s a tiresome, familiar story.
Last month, a number of hacked e-mails from University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit (CRU) suggested that researchers had discussed how to suppress and manipulate data to favor a case for global warming. Reportedly some e-mails indicate that the director of the research unit in question may have contacted other researchers and asked them to “delete certain e-mails.”
And the news surfaced –either conveniently, coincidentally or suspiciously– ahead of this week’s climate change summit.
The director of CRU, Phil Jones, has stepped down until completion of an independent inquiry into the matter. The United Nations has announced it, too, will conduct an investigation.
So what we have now are the usual suspects in the global warming debate: Climate skeptics who argue that the e-mails are proof that man-made global warming is a hoax, because the scientific consensus rigged.
Meanwhile, the hacked scientists and their defenders argue that the e-mails amount to a tempest in a teacup, just another trumped-up attack from the skeptics.
