NBC10 Philadelphia Green Homes 2011

In 2011, NBC10 will focus much of the year on informing and educating consumers about the construction of three different residential projects across the Delaware Valley through a project called the NBC 10 Philadelphia Green Home. The process and materials used to build and service the homes will be energy efficient and eco-friendly, thus providing a real life example of how to build and live GREEN.

NBC10’s Green Homes will contribute to the Delaware Valley’s recent recognition as one of the leading markets in energy conservation and community sustainability.

What Are green Collar Jobs?

Background
What’s the best way to give Americans of all socioeconomic backgrounds a tangible stake in fighting for issues like global warming?

Easy: Make it their livelihood. Every day, about 135 million people go to work in the U.S. Imagine what would happen if millions of those jobs—plus new ones created for people who are currently unemployed—were in fields like renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and green building.

Our two crucial concerns about survival—the environment and making a living—would be combined. A person’s commitment to their job would also be their commitment to the planet.

Right now, there’s a great opportunity not only to make America’s economy stronger by making it greener, but to make Americans living in poverty part of a revitalized middle class. The first thing we have to do is provide the training that will turn 20th century blue-collar jobs into secure 21st-century green-collar jobs.

Did You Know…
There’s already a huge green economy developing. In 2006 renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies generated 8.5 million new jobs, nearly $970 billion in revenue, and more than $100 billion in industry profits.
According to the National Renewable Energy Lab, the major barriers to a more rapid adoption of renewable energy and energy efficiency in America are insufficient skills and training.

In December 2007, President Bush signed the Green Jobs Act to train workers for green collar jobs. It authorizes $125 million for workforce training programs targeted to veterans, displaced workers, at-risk youth, and families in extreme poverty. It will train people for jobs like installing solar panels and weatherization.

Employment Opportunity: Empire State Building Goes Green

07empire_6001

Once the world’s tallest building, the Empire State Building is striving for another milestone: It is going green.

Owners of the New York City landmark announced on Monday that they will be beginning a renovation this summer expected to reduce the skyscraper’s energy use by 38 percent a year by 2013, at an annual savings of $4.4 million. The retrofit project will add $20 million to the $500 million building makeover already under way that aims to attract larger corporate occupants at higher rents.

Although the retrofit was specifically designed for the Art Deco office building at 34th Street and Fifth Avenue and its enormous features — 102 stories, 2.6 million square feet, 6,500 windows and 73 elevators — the energy-efficiency improvements are meant to serve as a model for other office buildings around the world, said Anthony E. Malkin, president of Wien & Malkin, which supervises the building on behalf of the owners, the Malkin family and the Helmsley estate.

He said upfront costs are often a deterrent for retrofitting older buildings, but the energy savings for the building , built in 1931, are expected to pay back those costs in only about three years.

“People associate greening with expense and compromise,” Mr. Malkin said. “We’re trying to prove: no compromise and payback.” Continue reading

“I’m not going to wait any more in this ridiculous line just to stand on bamboo floors!” A frustrated would-be clubgoer exclaimed as she gave up trying to get in the door at Greenhouse, the hot new “green nightclub” that opened last night in lower New York City (150 Varick Street).

It’s exciting that Greenhouse is finally coming to life, since we’ve been hearing about it for more than a year. In the Soho address that long played home to underground house Saturday-night event Club Shelter (and may still play host, when Shelter reopens soon), Greenhouse is a bilevel, 6,000-square-foot space that is the first New York nightlife destination seeking LEED certification for green.
